Develop the Safety Culture
Consultancy and Training Projects with a Leading Ship Management Company
Introduction:
Shipping companies are under increasing pressure to optimize their operations for efficiency and profitability in the face of growing competition and expanding global trade. This involves dealing with a range of challenges, including changing regulations, environmental concerns, technological advancements, political environments, and insecurities due to the growing threat of piracy attacks and war between countries.
This case study outlines a consultancy project undertaken to address operational gaps leading to lapses in safety & quality-related processes within a leading shipping company. The project focused on conducting a comprehensive gap analysis and designing tailored training programs to bridge identified deficiencies.
Client Background:
The client, a leading global provider of independent ship management services operating across international waters, faced challenges maintaining operational excellence due to notable safety incidents amid rapid growth and evolving industry dynamics. Despite robust infrastructure and a skilled workforce, communication gaps between the Ship and the Shore Management, leading to inconsistent performance, hindered their ability to meet customer demands effectively. Safety is always a top priority for the organization, as the company manages ships that transport highly explosive, dangerous, and environmentally sensitive cargo such as oil, gas, and chemicals. The organization is committed to developing a strong ‘safety culture’ and continually looks for ways to improve and undertake regular internal audits of all the ships and offices.
Consultancy Engagement:
Strive High was engaged to conduct a thorough assessment of the company’s operations, identify behavioral gaps, and develop targeted learning interventions in the form of training workshops to enhance the sharing of information between ship and shore management about incidents and near misses and improve best practices to improve overall efficiency and performance.
Process:
- A comprehensive analysis that included both qualitative and quantitative methods was carried out. This involved conducting interviews with key stakeholders such as senior management, department heads of Technical, QHSE, and Operations, technical superintendents, and sailing staff. The purpose of these interviews was to understand the organizational goals, challenges, and current practices. Following this, a survey was sent to a random selection of sailing officers to gather their feedback.
- •Detailed Assessment and Gap Analysis were conducted to Identify trainable and non-trainable issues leading to lapses in following safety and quality-related processes.
- Process mapping techniques were used to analyze performance metrics to identify areas of underperformance, bottlenecks, and communication breakdowns. Additionally, we delved into the company’s inner workings to identify factors such as teamwork, morale, and inter-departmental communication that directly impact the organization’s performance.
- Specific knowledge and skill gaps were identified by analyzing existing training programs, employee skill sets, and competency levels.
Designing Tailored Training Programs:
Based on the findings from the gap analysis, developed customized training modules focusing on areas such as:
- Effective communication and collaboration across teams and departments.
- Building leadership capabilities.
- Ensuring adherence to industry regulations and safety protocols to maintain compliance.
- Incorporated interactive learning methods, including workshops and real-life case studies, to ensure engagement and practical skill development.
- Collaborated with subject matter experts within the company and external industry specialists to ensure the relevance and accuracy of training content.
Implementation and Training Delivery:
- Rolled out the training programs in phases, beginning with pilot sessions to gather feedback and fine-tune content and delivery methods.
- Participants engaged in group activities, analyzed case studies, deliberated on the topics, practiced newly acquired skills, and walked away confident in their ability to apply them in their current roles.
- •Monitored participant progress and conducted regular evaluations to measure the effectiveness of training interventions and adjust as needed.
Outcomes:
The implementation of the tailored training programs yielded significant improvements in the operational performance of the shipping company:
- Enhanced Efficiency: Streamlined processes and improved communication led to reduced turnaround times, fewer errors, and smoother operations.
- Increased Compliance: Heightened awareness of regulatory requirements and adherence to safety protocols resulted in improved compliance standards.
- Skill Development: Employees demonstrated enhanced competencies in utilizing advanced technologies, fostering teamwork, and problem-solving.
- Improved Customer Satisfaction: With more efficient operations, the company experienced higher customer satisfaction ratings and strengthened client relationships.
Conclusion:
Through a systematic gap analysis and the implementation of tailored training programs, the shipping company successfully overcame operational challenges, positioning itself for long-term growth and competitiveness in the global maritime market. The collaborative approach between the consultancy team and the client fostered a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, driving positive outcomes across the organization.
